School Uniforms

!±8± School Uniforms

There has been a debate back and forth about the use of uniforms in the school system. While some parents agree they are a wise choice, others argue against. Let's take a look at some of the reasons for school uniforms.

When purchasing school uniforms it doesn't matter which brand you buy. They all have to conform to the same code and only limited stores make uniforms. Therefore the social status of who has better and more expensive clothing is taken out of the equation. School age children really start to realize what labels are and that if children wear a certain brand they may not have a lot of money. Sadly some children will be outcasts for just this small experience. School uniforms limit this labeling and put all children on a level playing field.

Modesty is another benefit to school uniforms. Uniforms are made to look nice and to be worn correctly. Usually tops are collared button top shirts that are tucked into khaki or dark slacks. Skirts and shorts are to be worn below the finger tips. There are no longer inappropriate clothing issues and nasty phone calls to parents or problems with obscene sayings or short skirts or other problems.

Uniforms are also convenient in the morning where many American families are rushing around to start the day. In the morning rush it can be difficult to find clothing and arguing with a child is not in the time frame. Uniforms eliminate this struggle in the morning and make it easy to figure out what the child is going to wear for the day.

On the other side of the coin, children are unable to express their individuality. They can no longer show their artistic talents through the way they dress. There are no color hues to express the thoughts and feelings of the child. Most uniforms eliminate the bright colors that are prevalent among children, pinks, greens, yellows, oranges, a variety of hues among blue, red, purple, among others.

Another downside to school uniforms is that parents now have to buy two sets of clothes. Now school shopping takes on a whole new meaning. There is school uniforms and school socks and school shoes and then there are play clothes and church clothes, and after school clothes and sports clothes. So while school uniforms may be cheaper in the long run it can be more expensive.

School uniforms are also unpleasant and can be uncomfortable to the student. When new students come into a new school that has uniforms it can be an adjustment until the student is settled in the new clothes. Many a student has complained about the hot scratchy sweaters or bothersome skirt.

There are benefits and disadvantages to school uniforms. While most children may not like the look and feel of the uniforms and the inability to pick and choose what they want to wear, they can be a better alternative to other clothes. Especially since so many clothing that is manufactured is grossly inappropriate with the short skirts and short shorts.

Ensuring Students Follow School Dress Codes

!±8± Ensuring Students Follow School Dress Codes

With the new school year underway, there have been a few instances across the country of recently created or modified school uniform dress codes encountering some issues with student compliance. Ensuring that any changes to a school's dress code are implemented effectively hinges on two critical components: adequate notice to families and an atmosphere of constant enforcement among faculty and staff.

Adequate Notice to Families - Every change to a school's dress code should be approved at least 3 months prior to those changes taking effect. Some states have even legislated the minimum amount of time school board must give to families notifying them of any changes. Just passing a dress code modification at a school board meeting and sending a letter home will not always ensure that those changes get to all parents. A school district must use all means necessary (automated phone calls home, TV, local publications) to convey any changes to students and parents.

Atmosphere of Constant Enforcement - The effective enforcement of a uniform policy cannot end at homeroom. While most dress code infractions are caught at the beginning of the day as students enter school, there are times throughout the day when students have the opportunity to modify their look. Whether it is between classes at a locker or after changing for gym class, faculty and staff must be ready and willing to enforce the dress code all day.

Too often, school districts experience a successful beginning to their uniform policies but then start to see a decline in student compliance over time. If the enforcement of a school's uniform policy becomes too lax and an atmosphere of constant enforcement is not created, the end result is usually discussion about the repealing or softening of the policy.

In addition, schools that have failed in uniform implementation have sometimes been too quick to create a uniform policy and failed to engage important educational stakeholders. Providing adequate notice and realizing an atmosphere of constant enforcement requires the "buy-in" of parents and teachers. A successful "buy-in" is obtained by taking a methodical and measured approach to creating or modifying a school uniform policy.
